Application

Eltrombopag olamine (marketed as Promacta in the United States and Gavireto in Europe) is a thrombopoietin receptor agonist primarily used in the treatment of thrombocytopenia, a condition where the body has a low platelet count. It is approved for use in adults with chronic immune (idiopathic) thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) who have had an insufficient response to corticosteroids, immunoglobulins, or splenectomy.

Eltrombopag olamine works by stimulating the bone marrow to produce more platelets, which are essential for blood clotting and preventing excessive bleeding. It binds to and activates the thrombopoietin receptor on bone marrow progenitor cells, leading to increased platelet production.

In addition to its approved use in ITP, eltrombopag olamine is also being studied for other potential applications. For example, it is being investigated for the treatment of thrombocytopenia in patients with liver disease, hematologic malignancies, and following bone marrow transplantation.
